Victory for Krevolin & Horst: Unlawful Voting Maps Ruled Out in Georgia

ATLANTA, GA – November 2, 2023 – Krevolin & Horst is proud and thrilled to learn that a federal court agreed with its clients that Georgia’s Congressional and state legislative maps violated Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act and are barred from use in any future election.

With its co-counsel Elias Law Group, Krevolin & Horst filed suit in December 2021, hours after the now-enjoined maps were signed into law. Alongside co-counsel, Krevolin & Horst attorneys Joyce Gist Lewis and Adam Sparks, with critical support from Ben Winstead, Patina Clarke, and others, tried cases for two groups of plaintiffs over eight days in September 2023.

The Court entered an order requiring the state to adopt new districts that do not dilute the voting strength of Black voters across Georgia, retaining jurisdiction to ensure any new maps comply with federal law, and awarding judgment to plaintiffs. Georgia’s governor called the legislature into special session later this year to enact new maps that comply with federal law. The Court has set a December 8 deadline for the legislature to comply with its order.
